What awaits you as part of the Schönbrunn Group?

Anyone who works with us becomes part of a story that fascinates our guests from all over the world.

To give you a clearer picture of the varied, diverse work at our historic sites, we've gathered a few important questions and answers for you here.

Your working-time model depends on your role.

In our operational areas (guest services, shop, gardens, animal care) you work in shift and rotation systems. Our sites are open to guests almost every day of the year - that means weekend and public-holiday shifts are part of the job. Part-time to full-time are both possible.

In administration you work flexitime (core hours 9 am – 3 pm, Friday 9 am – 12 pm) and have the option of one day of home office per week.

Role-specific details - weekends, roster preferences, part-time models, on-call, seasonality and how everything fits with your life circumstances - are clarified in your personal interview.

Yes - many roles come with work clothing. We provide enough uniforms. Laundering is the employee's own responsibility.

Our internal working language is German. In guest-facing roles (invigilator, cultural guiding, shop, ticketing) English is required, as we welcome millions of guests from all over the world every year. Further languages are a great asset.

Our team includes people from over 50 nationalities - that enriches our daily work together and how we relate to our guests.

Each workplace is characterized by unique physical and climatic conditions. We're happy to give you more information in the interview.

In some working areas, high temperatures in summer and cold in winter are to be expected - for example in the show rooms of the palaces, in some offices and in outdoor tasks.

We provide appropriate workwear for the different conditions and continue to improve wherever this is structurally possible. Please bear in mind, when applying, the physical demands that come with the conditions described.

Physical demands vary considerably by role. Positions in visitor services, gallery supervision, gardening, the maintenance yard, or animal care involve being on your feet, being on site, and interacting with large numbers of visitors - that comes with working at one of Austria's most-visited cultural sites. Other roles, for example in administration, are desk-based.

Where the role calls for it, physical stamina and strong communication skills make a good combination. The specific demands of the position you're applying for are something we're happy to discuss in person.

We offer comfortable break rooms with small kitchens including microwaves, and free coffee and tea. In summer, there's often a free ice cream to cool off!

We work with hundreds of visitors from all over the world every day. The most beautiful part is watching them leave the palace happy and satisfied - that's when I know it's been a good day.

Sheila, Guest Services

The work needs more than language skills - it needs a real sense of teamwork. Working with such a diverse group of colleagues takes mutual respect.

Dario, Guest Services

Being a gardener is a physically demanding job outdoors, exposed to wind, sun, rain and snow. But that's a small price for getting to marvel at the wonders of nature every day.

Sustainability at the Schönbrunn Group

Sustainability is a natural part of our daily work. Our mission begins with cultural heritage itself: we preserve historic building fabric, care for gardens with traditions going back 300 years, and maintain rooms meant to last for generations.

We put this sense of responsibility into ecological practice too - from energy efficiency in our historic buildings through to sustainable procurement and waste reduction. Our employees are actively involved in sustainability initiatives.

You can find out more about how we bring together sustainability and responsible stewardship of our cultural heritage on our sustainability page.

Diversity at the Schönbrunn Group

Our team brings together people from over 50 nationalities - with different life stories, languages and experiences, each of which enriches us.

Diversity here also shows in the different phases of life of our team: from summer job to colleagues with more than 20 years of service - our team spans ages 16 to 75, and 60% of leadership positions are held by women.

The many international guests make the work interesting. My team members also come from various countries, and we all work well together.

Kamila, Cleaning and Guest Services

We have a really diverse team with an incredible range of talents. Everyone brings their own expertise. Whether through experience, training, languages or life paths. Come as you are! I love that.

Angelika, Deputy Head of Guest Services

It's lovely to keep meeting new colleagues, some of whom become friends who make work more pleasant - and are the rock you can lean on in stressful moments.

Anna, Guest Services

Learning & Development

We draw on centuries of experience. That's why expertise, team spirit and interest in cultural context are the foundations of our approach.

To equip each and every one of us as well as possible, we invest specifically in developing our people: with structured programmes that deepen professional knowledge, widen the view beyond one's own area, and open up international experience.

From cultural mediator to interested career-changer - participation and involvement of everyone is the key to developing our cultural flagship organisation.

Echocast

Echocast is our internal certification programme, also used at many other cultural institutions. Depending on your role, you complete training modules in cultural guiding, guest services, professional conduct and safety.

The result: you become more confident in your tasks, work more independently, and with a stronger guest focus. Colleagues consistently tell us the programme visibly moves them forward in their work - and that the personal exchange within it is invaluable.

Weiterbildungsprogramme Schönbrunn Group Mitarbeitende

Jobshadowing

Employees interested in getting to know another area, or in developing professionally, have the chance to spend a day exploring another department.

This makes exchange between departments easier and creates internal awareness of the full range of tasks. Processes become more tangible, and employees are supported in their own work with fresh insights, perspectives and inspiration.

Weiterbildungsprogramme Schönbrunn Group Mitarbeitende

Mobility Grants

All employees have the option of applying for a learning trip to a member organisation of „European Royal Residences". It's a great opportunity to become a temporary part of the local team at another imperial residence. The goal is to learn from other cultural institutions and bring that learning back to our own sites.

These learning trips enrich everyone involved and create connections beyond company and national borders. They give us continual inspiration for our daily work - for example around nature-based methods or school programmes.

Career paths & development

Diverse development steps and career journeys are part of our organisational culture. We prefer to fill positions internally and actively support each step. Anyone who shows commitment and wants to keep learning finds an employer here who makes that possible.

A seasonal shop worker becomes shop manager over the years. A gardener grows into a head of department. A colleague starts at reception and today leads events in the Apothekertrakt. And a summer intern takes on a leadership role in a team after finishing national service.

These are the finest stories our employees write at the Schönbrunn Group - their own sight-worthy success stories.

Leadership

Leadership needs stability and the courage to change. Especially in an organisation like ours, which preserves historic substance while acting in a contemporary way. That's our aspiration - not only as a leadership principle, but as daily practice.

Together with all leaders across our four sites, we developed - through a thorough process - five principles that describe how we take responsibility, stay in dialogue, and specifically foster strengths.

Our leadership principles

Lead yourself well

Build resilience & sustain mental strength

Give orientation

Take responsibility & shape things with courage

Foster dialogue

Create transparency & provide safety

Develop by strengths

Extend trust & foster empowerment

Shape the future

Encourage courage & drive innovation responsibly

The backing and encouragement I've always received from my line managers can't be replaced.

Elvira, Administration

Before I applied for the deputy shop manager role, my line manager told me: 'Whatever the outcome, we'll back you 100% on your journey.

Jördis, Shop Manager

My direct line manager always has an open ear for me, treats everyone with respect, encourages me and gives me her trust.

A story of leadership at the Schönbrunn Group

LEADERSHIP CULTURE  TEAM DEVELOPMENT  Dialogue

With the 2025 workshop series on leadership culture, I had my defining aha-experience: we're all in the same boat, and dealing with similar challenges. It sounds simple, but if you never hear that from colleagues in completely different areas and sites, you can feel alone with your own issues sometimes. That realisation changed my leadership.

For me, leadership means embodying commitment, professional expertise and social responsibility. I try to live that every day, and I stand by my colleagues with practical help and support. That goes beyond the professional: if there are personal problems, I'm there. That's not an extra task - it's part of my responsibility.

In practice, this is reflected in how my team works. Every colleague in our department is trained every year - sometimes a tree-pruning seminar, sometimes a first-aid course, sometimes a plant-care course. For especially committed colleagues, I make room for specialist training and send them to other gardens for professional exchange - as Prince Eugene himself considered right in his day.

Dialogue works on several levels for us. The season-start breakfast in March and the year-end gathering in November are fixed dates. Between them, we meet every few weeks after shift for informal exchange. And each week I meet with our forewomen and foremen. These regular formats create clarity and trust - and everyone knows where they stand.

I work a lot, and I love my work. Sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse. But I know my limits too. When things got difficult, I could turn to People Development and get support: those who know their limits can share them with others.

One concrete change shows how this attitude works: I restructured my team and built up a third foreman from within it. That takes weight off us in administration and planning, and gives the outdoor team more structure. A small change with a big effect.
